It’s that time of the year again. Our third, fifth, and seventh graders are sharpening their #2 pencils in preparation for taking the Terra Nova Standarized Achievement Tests starting a week from next Monday, March 5th. Here are some test-taking tips that I would like to share with you.
1) Make certain your child gets a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast each morning, and get to school on time.
2) Be positive. Let your child know that the test is a “snapshot” of the many things he/she has learned so far. Explain that some questions will be hard to answer and others will be easy. Doing your best is what counts.
3) Encourage your child to answer ALL of the questions and DO NOT leave any blanks. There is no penalty for guessing and he/she can get partial credit on the open-ended, constructed response questions. *A word of caution about changing answers- usually your first choice is correct. If you have to change an answer, be sure to erase completely.
4) Remind your child to listen carefully to the directions from the teacher and to read the directions and each question carefully, especially the constructed response and written questions. Many students loose points, because they did not read the directions correctly, especially questions that have two or more parts and/or the responses are not written neatly and legibly.
5) Encourage your child to stay focused on the test, even if other students finish early.
6) Last of all, when you receive the results in May, don’t compare performance with siblings or friends. Instead, congratulate high scores and improvement.
Have A Good Week!
